Horses Helping Heal the Human Soul...

Horses have always been one of the most beautiful animals I have ever seen. But I was never one of those little girls that was horse crazy. My sister rode but being the youngest of four girls I wanted to do something of my own. It wasn't until I graduated from college that I began trail riding with a friend for about four months before I moved away. I loved everything about it! The smell and feel of the horse, the connection with such a big and powerful animal, and the feeling of being outside in nature.

Since then there was always this idea of doing some type of counseling for adolescents with horses. it wasn't a clearly formulated idea but always there. My husband purchased me riding lessons for Christmas because he was sick of listening to me just talk about horses and this vague idea. Then I came across the book The Tao of Equus. It was exactly what I wanted to do but never had the words for. I ended up going to a workshop, completing their apprentice program and then returning to facilitate another group going through the program.

A dear friend I met at Epona gave me a red filly after a red mare appeared to me in a dream. We purchased another and was given beautiful gray mare that is now the shining star of my program. My filly's father came to live with us a short time later.

These horses have truly changed my life. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't always been warm and fuzzy. Each one of them has had a huge lesson for me. I've run the gamut of emotions with all of them but always paid attention to what they were teaching me. Or tried to anyway. They have kept me honest, taught to me to trust, and have made me live in integrity. They have truly been my greatest teachers.
